On leaving and the possibility of returning in a guest role:
- “I guess I’m probably in denial. I’m not thinking that far ahead, and I’ll bet when I read that last script, I’m going to cry like a baby. And there’s the possibility that later, the team might need Prentiss or ‘Criminal Minds’ might need Paget. And I’m game.”
On fans’ response to her leaving:
- “I made the mistake — and so many actors do this — of looking at message boards. It felt like half the people were saying, ‘This is great, I want to see her do comedy,’ and the other half were saying, ‘What an ungrateful creep. She left, and then she came back, and now she’s leaving again.’ It hurt to read that people were mad. It made me feel bad. I understand how they feel, though. I’m a fan of shows, too, and I want my favorite characters to be where I want them to be. I’m touched and flattered that there’s any kind of response to what I choose to do for a job. That’s pretty unusual. The entire experience is bittersweet.”
I really hope that everyone who made comments like this in the wake of Paget’s announcement feels really fucking shitty about it right now. Because let’s remember: Paget didn’t choose to leave CM the first time round. She was fired. She used the decision to try to pursue other options, and then CM ordered her back by exercising a contract clause, without giving her a choice, which she herself has acknowledged. She wasn’t an ‘ungrateful creep’ who jumped back into the show as soon as she was given a chance and then bailed; she was forced back to work for a company that treated her like shit. She says the experience has been bittersweet. The assholes calling her ungrateful? That’s a part of the bitter. You were upset about losing a fictional character you loved, so you proceeded to hurt the extremely talented and very real person who portrayed her. I really, honestly hope you have the self-awareness and basic human decency to realize how fucking awful that is.
